Barbados: Caribbean Literature, Language, and Culture
This course for undergraduate IUPUI students interested in studying gender, culture, and the African diaspora specific to the Anglophone Caribbean. It provides an inrtedisciplinary perspective on Caribbean literature, gender and sexuality, culture, and history, with a focus on Barbados.
Domincan Republic: Drug use and treatment in the Dominican Republic
This course will provide a general introduction to issues surrounding substance use and mental health in the Dominican Republic. It is designed to inform and challenge participants to observe and solve problems related to substance abuse, emphasizing low- and middle-income countries. Students will investigate barriers to solving problems of alcohol and drug abuse and mental health treatment, as well as the economic and social causal factors. They will also research addiction issues while examining the roles of local and national governments, international agencies, and third-party intervention.
Europe: Philanthropy in a Comparative European Perspective
Do you believe that it is philanthropy or the government that should be responsible for addressing social needs? During this study abroad program, we will visit both Germany (Berlin and Hamburg) and the Netherlands (Amsterdam and Rotterdam). We will be interacting with local students to—among other things—better understand our own and other's ideas and values about the role of philanthropy and government in society. Furthermore, we will learn from local academic and professional philanthropy experts how it is possible that Germany and the Netherlands have the largest nonprofit sectors in the world, given that they also have very strong (welfare) states. During the program, we will continuously contrast our findings with the role of philanthropy in the United States. We will also visit and volunteer for German and Dutch nonprofits to experience have a firsthand experience with philanthropy in a European Context.
Ghana: Sankofa A Cultural Journey Through Ghana
This program explores the historical and contemporary cultures of Ghana, including historical topics covering slavery, colonization, liberation, integration, globalization, the promotion of unity and solidarity, women in development, and regional economic communities.
Poland: Intercultural Communication
Spend two weeks in Wroclaw, Poland examining intercultural interaction from a communication perspective. Explore issues of ethnicity, culture, gender and social/economic class.
Worldwide: International Human Rights Law Internships, School of Law
McKinney School of Law students do internships in the field of international human rights law. The substantive areas of their work have touched on many of the SDGs, and can potentially touch on all of them. Since 1997, our program has had international human rights law internship placements in over 75 countries on six continents.
Worldwide: Master of Social Work Field Practicum
MSW level field practicum in social work placements around the world. Placements last 4-5 months.
Worldwide: Philanthropic Studies Internship
This course fulfills the core internship requirement for both undergraduate and graduate students in Philanthropic Studies.
