The Fulbright U.S. Program provides fully funded research, study, and teaching opportunities for graduates and graduate students
IUI is a Fulbright partner university and the campus coordinator is Stephanie Leslie, the Director of Study Abroad, (slleslie@iu.edu; 317-278-0716). All interested applicants are advised to contact her for guidance. IUI campus application procedures are described below.
About?
The Fulbright U.S. Program is an exchange program designed for young American professionals interested in pursuing a year of graduate study, research, teaching at various levels abroad. Yearly, roughly 1,900 Fulbright grants are awarded, allowing recipients to participate in over 140 countries worldwide. The application process for this prestigious award is extensive.

Am I eligible?
- Applicants to the Fulbright program must be U.S. citizens at the time of application.
- Applicants must complete a bachelor's degree prior to the start of the grant.
- Applicants must be in good health, as certified by a physician.
- Applicants must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the written and spoken language of their country of choice.
- Applicants may hold a J.D. or an M.D. while applying for a Fulbright.
Preference is given to applicants who:
- Have not previously held a Fulbright grant
- Completed the majority of their higher education in the U.S.
- Have not lived in the country they are applying to for more than 6 months (undergraduate study abroad is exempt from this rule)

Are you a faculty member?
If you will be writing a letter of recommendation or submitting an independent study/research project proposal, you will receive the link to the evaluation form once the student has submitted his/her complete application.

Award Types
Open Study/Research Awards
The Fulbright Study/Research Award is the traditional award opportunity where a candidate designs a proposal for a specific country. Read the Country Summaries for more information.
English Teaching Assistant Awards
The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant programs place grantees in schools overseas to supplement local English language instruction and to provide a native speaker presence in the classrooms. View the countries offering English Teaching Assistant Awards here.
Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship
- The Fulbright–National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellowship provides a unique platform for American Fulbright students to develop global narratives and discuss commonalities across borders around a common issue or theme. Trained, supported, and mentored by National Geographic Editors during their grants in one or multiple countries, Fellows will use new media platforms to help build ties across cultures while enhancing mutual understanding. The digital content that they produce will be featured online in various places, including, most prominently, a blog hosted by National Geographic.
Critical Language Enhancement Award
The Critical Language Enhancement Award provides a supplement in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for grantees to receive between three and six months of intensive language study in addition to their research or study grants. This opportunity is available for select languages and in limited host countries.
