Barbados: Caribbean Literature, Language, and Culture
This course is for undergraduate IUI students interested in studying gender, culture, and the African diaspora specific to the Anglophone Caribbean. It provides an interdisciplinary perspective on Caribbean literature, gender and sexuality, culture, and history, with a focus on Barbados.
This program will promote a responsible, sustainable tourism experience and “green” travel best practices to impose minimal impact when visiting tourist destinations. The content will cover how to motivate and change travel behavior, visit destinations to assist in improving the well-being of local residents, support of local business to stimulate economic development, respect for cultures and local traditions, and educate travelers on environmental awareness and ecological conservation.
Costa Rica: Honors College Service Learning
This program will allow Honors College students to have service learning experiences in community organizations in the Uvita area that are focused on marine and coastal sustainability. Through their service learning, the students will engage in dialogue with Costa Ricans to learn about Costa Rican society and culture as they learn about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These service experiences will provide students with multiple perspectives on the challenge of the UN Agenda for 2030 through sustained engagement with local community members engaged in environmental work.
Croatia: Social Work Practice in Post-War Communities
This international service-learning experience will provide students with an opportunity to learn and work with community development groups active in community reconstruction efforts, practice social work macro-practice, interact with community development actors, and work with multidisciplinary teams.
Denmark: Exploring Art, Design, and Everyday Life
Students immerse themselves in the city life of Copenhagen and explore neighborhoods and parks; they learn about how Quality of Life is central to the design culture of Denmark by talking to designers and visiting design studios; they try out living like a Dane by going to places by bicycle. The most impactful aspect of the trip is simply experiencing the holistic and people-centered values that embody Danish design.
Dominican Republic: School of Medicine - Medical Community Service
The purpose of this experience is to introduce participants to the 7 Elements of Human Securities in the Dominican Republic and the barriers associated with each element, all while offering sustainable relief to local communities. Students will engage in lectures and daily community service activities. While the specific service projects may change from year to year, they will consistently revolve around similar themes. Recent programs have particularly emphasized community diagnostics, water availability, and health promotion.
Dominican Republic: VIDA Health Partnerships
The aim of this experience is to familiarize and educate participants with the 7 Elements of Human Securities in the Dominican Republic and their associated challenges, all while contributing to sustainable relief efforts for local communities. Students will engage in both lectures and daily community service activities. While the specific service projects may change annually, they will consistently revolve around similar themes. Recent programs have placed a strong emphasis on community diagnostics, water availability, and health promotion. This program is exclusively designed for undergraduate students who are members of VIDA.
Ghana: Sankofa A Cultural Journey Through Ghana
This program explores the historical and contemporary cultures of Ghana, including historical topics covering slavery, colonization, liberation, integration, globalization, the promotion of unity and solidarity, women in development, and regional economic communities.
Poland: Intercultural Communication
Spend two weeks in Wroclaw, Poland, examining intercultural interaction from a communication perspective. Explore issues of ethnicity, culture, gender, and social/economic class.
Worldwide: International Human Rights Law Internships, School of Law
McKinney School of Law students do internships in the field of international human rights law. The substantive areas of their work have touched on many of the SDGs, and can potentially touch on all of them. Since 1997, this program has had international human rights law internship placements in over 75 countries on six continents.
Worldwide: Master of Social Work Field Practicum
MSW level field practicum in social work placements around the world. Placements last 4-5 months.
